Bezels: functionality and beauty

The watch bezel is the outer ring that surrounds the dial of the watch, and has been invented to provide both functionality and/or fashion statements. In most cases the bezel of the watch serves to add chronometric functionality to the watch by allowing the user to quickly move the zero to line up with the minute hand. When used with respect to the hour hand, the bezel can help differentiate time zones and as such is a very useful addition to watches that have been trying to push the global statement.

When complications are an essential need for the user; there are now watches that boast inner rotating bezel as well as exterior, to pack more functionality within the one time piece. This can be seen on many SEIKO watches, which are built with functionality at heart.

At times, the bezel does not need to serve a functional role, but rather one of beauty. This is often seen on women’s watches where time markings on the bezel are substituted with diamonds, emeralds, sapphires or crystals. These additions to the face of the watch, make the watch more feminine in nature, although this may not be strictly the case. It is now common place to also find men’s watches with crystals and diamonds mounted into a fixed bezel.
